— Jung-hyun to Hwang Jun-ho, shortly before getting shot
Kye Jung-hyun (Worker 028) was one of the workers of the Squid Games in 2020. He was secretly an organ trafficker prior to working at the games.
History[]
Background[]
Kye Jung-hyun was born in South Korea at least 30 years before the Squid Games. He learned to dive by the time he became an adult, which proved to be useful during the 2020 games.
Squid Games[]
Jung-hyun eventually became a guard at the games by at least the 2020 games. He was assigned to be a worker, doing menial tasks such as collecting eliminated players and then incinerating them after each of the six games. At some point before the games, Jung-hyun came into contact with other guards, who formed an illegal organ trafficking operation with the doctor (who in exchange gets to know the games ahead of time) to sell organs of deceased contestants on the Chinese black market. While selling organs, he became friends with one of the other workers. He communicated with his friend via Morse code, both being unhappy about the rules of being a worker.
On one of the dives, Jung-hyun was saved by the worker he befriended. On the night of the first game, the guards in the operation brought in a contestant who somehow survived her elimination. Jung-hyun acted quickly and beat the player with a crowbar. The guards then took turns having sex with the player before operating on her. He almost died making the delivery that evening, although he only got half the price due to the player having only one kidney.
On June 23, Hwang Jun-ho hitched a ride on the bottom of the car Number 29 was driving. When the workers went to scan the players, Jun-ho beat him to death, unbeknownst to Jung-hyun and the other guards. After curfew that evening, Jung-hyun tries to communicate in Morse code with his friend
Chapter 13 A Tale of Two “Houses”: The Scandals of Hereditary Succession and Super-Mega-Church Construction in Korea, and Old Testament Ethics
Abstract
The hereditary succession of the senior pastorate and the extravagant construction of mega-church buildings are two pervasive ethical scandals that the Korean church suffers from. The coalescence of three factors caused them: (1) Confucian authoritarianism, (2) a shamanistic understanding of religion and role of pastors, and (3) the dominance of divine command ethics. As to the third factor, a survey of some important studies in Old Testament ethics by Chang Dae Kim, Han Young Lee, Keun-Jo Ahn, and Jun Hee Cha betrays a common tendency to prefer divine command ethics as the most important basis for Old Testament ethics. At the same time, facing a moral crisis, Jun Hee Cha and Keunjoo Kim recently called for the appreciation of natural law ethics, which can be applied as an ethic of common sense on a popular level. The appeal to an ethic of common sense can be a promising antidote for the moral scandals of the Korean church because it can check and balance the divine command ethics that is often (ab)used to justify the unethical behaviours of (senior) pastors who allegedly claim to represent the divine. John Barton’s discussion of natural law in the Old Testament is particularly useful for the Korean context in that it gives the natural law idea a “biblical” foundation and makes faith communities accountable to natural law, not only to divine commands. This is how Old Testament ethics, and Barton’s works on natural law ethics in particular, can make a difference to the contemporary Korean church.
