Sometimes life can take a rather unexpected turn, but God always provides what we need. Turibius was born in Mayorga, Spain. He studied law, becoming a professor at the University of Salamanca. King Philip II appointed Turibius as chief judge of the Inquisition in Granada. However, when the Archdiocese of Lima, Peru was in need of a new bishop, Turibius, though a layman, was chosen for the office. Although Turibius protested, he was ordained and sent to Peru. He arrived to a most daunting task. The Archdiocese of Lima at the time stretched from Panama to Argentina, but worse than the challenge presented by the geography was the moral disorder, especially among the clergy. So Turibius set to work in visiting his whole diocese and bringing about the reform it so desperately needed. He fought to protect the native population and the poor from oppression. Turibius also strove to learn the native language so as to be able to speak to the Natives himself. Often on his pastoral visitations, Turibius would lack a bed and sufficient food. As one can imagine, Turibius was met with much opposition in his work of reform, but he was not deterred. When some sought to justify their abusive behaviour by appealing to “local custom,” Turibius rebuked them saying, “Christ called Himself the Truth, not the custom.” After about twenty-five years of faithful and dedicated service, Turibius was laid to rest. Today let’s remember St. Turibius de Mogrovejo. “Lord, through the apostolic work of St. Turibius and his unwavering love of truth, you helped your Church to grow. May your chosen people continue to grow in faith and holines” Heaven is our Goal. Sources: Spanish prelate Saint Turibius of Mogrovejo, , Archbishop of Lima, is presented a book by a group of Incas. Full name, Toribio Alfonso de Mogrovejo. After a 17th century work. Reflection: On November 16, , a small group of Spanish conquerors captured the Inca ruler Atahualpa in modern-day Peru. The Spaniards arrived in the New World as explorers but were mostly interested in enriching themselves with silver and gold, of which the Incas had plenty. After receiving a room of gold and two rooms of silver as a ransom for Atahualpa, the Spaniards killed him anyway. Then they continued to conquer others, until , when the last of the indigenous rulers was defeated. Despite their Christian heritage, the Spaniards could be brutal; however, their presence enabled missionaries to arrive and begin the work of sharing the Gospel with the native people. In , Pope Paul III established the Diocese of Lima and appointed its first bishop who served for thirty-six years. Today’s saint, Saint Turibius of Mogrovejo, was born three years before the Diocese of Lima was established (It became an archdiocese in ) and would become Lima’s third archbishop. Toribio Alfonso de Mogrovejo (Turibius) was born of noble parents in the town of Mayorga, northwest Spain. He was named after a local fifth-century bishop and saint. Turibius was a devout child. He had a strong devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, prayed to her daily, and fasted every Saturday in her honor. He had |
