Lika Berning follows in her ouma's footsteps while filming 'French Toast'
Film and food are Lika Berning's great loves, so a combination of the two makes for a passionate production. The star of 'French Toast', an Afrikaans/English film sprinkled with French, hopes it will appeal to a wide audience - one that appreciates food, romance and comedy, along with subtitles.
"The dialogue is mostly in English and accessible to more people. But it's also a simple, authentic story with a compulsory French love affair in it. The food is shot so beautifully, deliciously, that I think it will be appealing to most people," the Cape-based Berning said on a visit to Joburg for the premiere.
"Authentic" might be a stretch, but it is a sweet story. Some scenes were shot in the pretty light of Paris and the rest in Stellenbosch and Hartbeespoort, where production company Hartiwood Films is based.
Berning, 35, who starred in the local blockbuster Liefling and appeared in The Bang Bang Club, plays virginal boeremeisie Lise le Roux, a photographer and the daughter of a wealthy winemaker (Deon Lotz). After her long-dead mother's journal reveals a lost sibling, born out of wedlock and given up for adoption in Paris, she leaves the farm to find the missing family member.
In Paris, Le Roux meets a French chef, Jean-Pierre Baptiste (Thierry Ballarin), and agrees to photograph his new cookbook in exchange for his help in tracking her sibling.
Tall and slender, Berning towers above her French counterpart and love interest, a cute character who charms her and the viewer.
The movie has its fair share of cheese. Touristy Parisian clichés like berets, brioche and bicycles.
"It is a light story, but there is depth," said Berning. "I love that she is searching for something important. A control freak and quite a sheltered girl, she is unfulfilled in her own life and goes looking for a part of herself, too."
