  • (APA) – Meles Zenawi’s dictatorial regime in Ethiopia on Thursday observed the International Day of Non-violence and 139th birth day of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, known as Mahatma Gandhi, with a call to end violence from Africa.

Prime Monster Meles Zenawi said Gandhi gave practical shape to the reality of passive resistance, non-cooperation and truth to fight tyranny and turned non-violence into an effective political tool. [This is coming from a dictator and a mass murderer who orders the shooting down of pro-democracy protectors.]

“We have witnessed events in recent years which demonstrate just how this philosophy—Gandhi’s non-violence— can be abused in Africa and else where. The concepts of non-violence and Gandhi’s aims and values have been twisted far away from reality and truth,” he said.

He said Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence is particularly relevant to Africa, which suffers from violence more than other continent.

“Violence has become almost a habit, with all-too-many benefiting from [violence] as, for example in Somalia,” he said.

The United Nations general assembly passed resolution in June 2007 to commemorate October 2 as the birth day of Mahatma Gandhi and the International Day of Non-violence, thus recognizing his lasting impact on the world.

Ethiopia and its self-Inflicted wounds. By Yilma Bekele

Some of our independent Web sites have put me in a quandary. That is not a good place to be. A certain amount of certainty is a must for rational existence. There have to be stuff that we all have to take for granted. Some things like a mother’s love for her child or the fact of gravity are not open for discussion. I include Shaleka Mengistu in this category. His crime against my country is not a talking point or something to bargain with. He was evil and he did evil things to us. No need to split hairs.

Well this last week I was forced to rethink a few things I took for granted. What made me wreck in agony was the issue of Shaleka Mengistu Haile Mariam and his place in our history. I know it is another assault on our country but this time I believe the blow was self-inflicted. Mengistu Haile Mariam was prominently displayed on our Independent Web sites. It was not to commemorate or celebrate his demise or some catastrophe that has befallen him but rather an interview with some Australian Amharic radio station offering us his advice and opinion.

That is what brought depression, sadness and a big dose of uneasiness in my already precarious existence. I was left wondering if something is wrong with me to so much obsess about such a matter. Was seeing the individual being quoted on our ‘fiercely pro democracy and upholders of Human Rights’ Web sites so troubling to loose sleep over?

I have come to the conclusion that it is something to worry about. It looks like our understanding of the concept of good and bad or evil is based on a shaky ground. It seems to be very fluid and open to interpretations based on other factors, which we are free to tack on. We love to qualify all our statements. He is evil but he loved his country is a common comment. I guess he loved us so much that he was willing to kill us all to see it his way.

It actually took me four days to force myself

    Introduction

Like many of my compatriots, I had the privilege to attend the meeting organized to have Ato Seeye Abraha address Ethiopians from the Seattle area on January 19, 2008. Thus, my report is that of an eyewitness. The first item that impressed me the most was the fact that there seems to be tremendous interest to listen to the presentation of Seeye. Indeed, it was obvious from his speech that Seeye feels deeply about Ethiopia and Ethiopians. I found him to be a humble and caring person, unlike the propaganda smear by his detractors. Seeye is a person who has been tested and has proven himself as a politician of substance worth listening to, and uniquely qualified to bring together opposing groups and individuals in the singular interest of the unity of Ethiopia. Thus, his one-man mission to meet with fellow Ethiopians in his travels had attracted many thousands in North America, in particularly Washington DC, Denver, and Seattle.

Seeye Abraha captured in his energetic articulation of the inner reality of the diverse political views (lives) of the many feuding Ethiopians and their organizations. Chinua Achebe in his novel ¡§A Man of the People¡¨ narrates about two contrasting groups of people in West Africa. In that novel he describes two characters representing the old and the new generations of politicians. The conflict between the old and the new political systems is portrayed through the two characters as they disagree and quarrel over political views. Seeye likewise captured in his articulation the essence of the ever present conflict between Ethiopian politicians, the new against the old, the leftist against the rightist, the Derg against the democratic et cetera that paralleled the main theme of Achebe's novel.

The most fundamental thing that a leader must do is to construct a compelling and winning vision. Seeye is reexamining the present and past effort of the democratization of Ethiopian pol
