A Conflict at the Movie Shooting of TholilaLi (Labourer, 1964)

In the previous chapter, I had inadvertently omitted a 1964 MGR movie, TholilaLi (Labourer), in which M.R. Radha had co-starred with MGR. This was a Devar Films Production. According to the reminiscence of ace script writer Aroor Das, who wrote the script, a conflict broke out between MGR and MRR in the dialogue. Let me give the translated version of what Aroor Das had recorded.

MGR in ‘TholilaLi’ movie

“Originally MGR was a bus company worker in that script. But he was dreaming to become a company owner. To indicate that hope, I had written ‘That’s my tomorrow’s trusting star.’ When I told that, MGR asked me, ‘Why you mention the star in that line?’ I told him the nativity of Jesus Christ story, in which the star was guiding the three Magi from the East. After listening, MGR responded, ‘I do appreciate it. But, when you mention the star, it may refer to the Suwatantra Party Why we should mention it? [Note by Sachi: Right-leaning Suwatantra Party was formed by C. Rajagopalachari in 1959, and star was its symbol.]

‘I didn’t realize it. It’s OK. So, instead of star, why not change it to ‘That’s tomorrow’s rising sun’. [Rising Sun is the symbol of DMK party]

‘Thank you very much’.

That was the script line ‘That’s tomorrow’s rising sun’ which MGR spoke, while the camera was on MRR’s face. That scene was completed. Then, MRR told,

‘Ramachandra! Don’t speak that rising sun phrase directly on my face.’

‘I didn’t say it. Here, the script writer is the one who asked me to say it.’

‘No! You are the one, who made him to change it. I have been listening to what Das was describing on the star origin. That was the optimal line here. You are the one, who had been thinking differently, and confused Das. I don’t care what you say. But, you cannot sa

Ayinoor Vasu (GROW Vasu) (born 1930) is a Human rights activist and trade unionist in Kerala, India.

Biography

Mr. A. Vasu is also an environmental activist. He is well known for his bold stands in the fight for justice for Dalits, Tribals and minority communities. He was the first public figure in Kerala to take a stand against the arrest of Abdul Nazer Mahdani.

He began working in the Commonwealth Trust Weaving Mill in Kozhikode at the age of 16 in 1946. He has participated in many social and human rights activities and got arrested many times. The leader of Ayinoor Vasu was one of the biggest labour movements in Kerala. In 2019 he signed a joint human right statement for the release of Student Activist Rinshad Reera.

Personal life

Grow Vasu was one of the forefront leaders in the Thirunelli Naxalite action in 1970 in which Varghese, a Naxalite leader was killed. Following this he was imprisoned at the Kannur Central Prison for seven years. After being released from jail, many refused to offer him employment because he was a Naxalite. To subsist, he made and sold umbrellas, a craft he learned in 1955 to raise funds for buying a band set for the Communist Party in Kozhikode.

Madras Rajagopalan Radhakrishnan Ravi mononymously called as Radha Ravi is an Indian actor and politician who played supporting roles throughout his career. He is the son of actor M. R. Radha and the uncle of Vasu Vikram and half-brother of Radhika. He is a former chief member of the Tamil Nadu Film Artistes' Association. He is known for his roles as antagonists in Tamil films and a he acted in the serial Chellamae. He is also known for his controversial criticism of other film personalities.

He was elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from Saidapet in 2001 as a member of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. He is one of the current state executive members of Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party.

Career

Radha Ravi was born to the well-known actor M. R. Radha and Dhanalakshmi Ammal. He has one brother, M. R. R. Vasu, and three sisters, Rashya, Rani and Rathikala. Having started his career as a theatre artiste, he still associates himself with plays. He is a man with diverse interests. He played the role of Julius Caesar in a Tamil drama when he was in the ninth standard. During his New College days, both his friends, Jailani and Rafee helped him to pursue his passion for theatre. He performed for V. K. Ramasamy troupe, M. R. R. Vasu troupe, T. K. Chandran troupe and the UAA troupe. In 1980, he started his own troupe Nadikavel Theatres. His first time before the camera was for a Kannada film Rahasya Rathri (1980), produced by actor Bharathi's father for BNK Pictures in 1976. His first Tamil film was Manmadha Leelai (1976), after Kamal Haasan recommended his name to K. Balachander.

Director Rama Narayanan gave his career a boost, while T. Rajendar was instrumental in casting him as a villain in Uyirullavarai Usha (1983).
