Chhavi Mittal shares what ‘motherhood can teach you’

Calling these changes a woman’s “superpowers”, she asked everyone to exercise them even with peers, adults, colleagues, friends, staff, parents, and spouses. “Imagine what we could achieve if only we did,” she said.

Chhavi emphasised that fathers, too, experience something similar. “Also, when I say motherhood, I actually mean parenthood. A big shoutout to the dads (like @mohithussein ) who believe in equal parenting without making it seem like a favour to anyone. Responsibility hai aapki, aur haq bhi,” she wrote, with a hashtag reading ‘equal parenting’.

Earlier, in an interaction with indianexpress.com, Dia Mirza had called motherhood “the most beautiful experience” of her life. “Like every working mother, I too felt the mom’s guilt. It definitely is tough and it hurts. The only way to deal with it is to ride the wave of the pangs of physical pain that you feel being separated from your child or just crying when you’re doing a video callwith your husband after you’ve seen your child. I guess everyone has their own way of dealing with it. But it is so important for children to be raised in an environment where they appreciate, respect, and understand that both their parents are going to seek a life that gives them the opportunity to live to their full potential,” she said, talking about mom’s guilt.

From playing the girl next door in television soap ‘Tumhari Disha’ in 2004 to battling cancer in early motherhood, actor Chhavi Mittal’s journey mirrors the quiet strength and fortitude of the characters she once portrayed. Now a digital content creator, Mittal spoke to Sneha Bhura about teaching her children the language of love, and why it is important for moms and dads to be equally involved.
You’ve had a successful career in television. How did your role as a mother influence your professional choices?
Around 2012, I had signed a new show for Star Plus as the lead when I found out I was pregnant. The first person I informed was my producer, and together we decided it wouldn’t make sense to join a show only to take a sabbatical a few months later. That marked the point when I began transitioning out of active television, after working non-stop for years. Motherhood significantly influenced my career choices. I wanted to be a hands-on parent, and didn’t want to miss any of my daughter’s milestones. My husband and I wanted to do everything together — from vacations to shopping, dinners and lunches. Eventually, he also chose to take a break from his career as a television director, and we started our own venture. Thankfully, we took the right steps, and it became successful enough for us to pursue it as a career.
What challenges did you face in the early stages of motherhood?
The biggest challenge for me was suddenly becoming a stay-at-home mom. I was used to working 30 days a month and led a very active lifestyle. We had been married for seven years before deciding to have kids. I believed that once the baby arrived, I would go back to work. But when my daughter Areeza (12) was born, everything changed. I couldn’t imagine leaving her even for a minute. For the first two years, I struggled to balance working and being a mother without feeling guilty about leavi

I heard my doctor laughing while pulling the baby out, “dekha? Pain free delivery”. And then the biggest horror! I was administered a sleeping injection without being asked, and suddenly I felt myself passing out. I found myself slurring when I said, "give my baby to me.. where's my baby.." I could not put my baby to the breast as I had so wanted to in the first few minutes. I slept till the next morning, waking up in panic repeatedly asking, “where’s my baby? Where’s my husband?” Scared shitless."
