Finger Eleven is a Canadian rock band from Burlington, Ontario, formed in They have currently released six studio albums. Best known for their songs One Thing, Slow Chemical and Paralyzer, Finger Eleven is an alternative rock band that has earned a devoted following. Their first album, Letters From Chutney, was recorded under the name Rainbow Butt Monkeys, with money won from a rock band search contest on local radio.

They changed their name to Finger Eleven for their breakthrough Tip, released on Mercury Records in Canada in , and re-released by Wind-Up Records in the United States in The name Finger Eleven comes from an earlier version of the song Thin Spirits from the album Tip. Finger Eleven first formed at Lester B. Pearson High School in Burlington, Ontario as Stone Soul Picnic, then changed their name to Rainbow Butt Monkeys. One of their first shows was at a school Christmas concert in , and they won the CHTZ (Hits) HTZ FM's Rock Search competition. At the time, the band's lineup consisted of lead vocalist Scott Anderson, guitarists James Black and Rick Jackett, bassist Sean Anderson (bass), and drummer Rob Gommerman.

They were signed by Mercury Records and, after releasing four EPs, they issued the album Letters from Chutney (), which received generally favourable reviews.[9&

    In April , Staind guitarist Mike Mushok and ex-Three Days Grace singer Adam Gontier began writing songs together, without the intention of creating a band. They ended up writing tracks and were impressed with what they had written. They recorded a three-song demo and garnered the interest of RCA Records. The duo later enlisted former Finger Eleven drummer Rich Beddoe, and former Dark New Day bassist Corey Lowery to complete their lineup. The band released their first teaser early May , which featured the fact that "25 Top Ten Rock Singles" were shared between each member, 17 of which are number ones, and teased the band's first single, logo and clips of the band. On May 15, , the group released their debut single "Better Place". They made their debut live performance at Rock on the Range as the opening act for the main stage on May 16, and were billed as a special guest. When asked about the title of the band, Gontier stated that they are "more like refugees that just hit it off creatively."
