Brian May gives his opinion on David Gilmour and Ritchie Blackmore
Brian May (Queen) recently was elected the best guitarist of all time on a poll made by Guitar World. He had more votes than names like Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page. In an new interview with the magazine the guitarist shared his opinion on other guitarists like David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) and Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple, Rainbow).
Brian May talked about Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, saying:
“A beautiful player. I love him and I have an enormous respect for him. I saw one of his first shows with Pink Floyd, which I’ll never forget. He was doing crazy things with a bottleneck, which fitted right in with their kind of chaotic performances at the time. He’s always been a great favorite of mine. A beautiful player.
“And we did play together for Armenia at one point. I asked him to come in and play ‘Smoke on the Water’ for Armenia Relief. I occasionally see him. We don’t keep that well in touch, but I’m very well aware of what magnificent work he does.”

“Another great hero of mine. He’s crazy. I mean, yeah, it was extraordinary watching him. I think he’s one of the most dangerous guitar players ever. And I mean that is in the best possible way. Beautiful! He was there way ahead of any of us.”

Brian Harold May was born in London, England, July 19, 1947. He built his own electric guitar known as Red Special that made his sound unique. In addition, some of his compositions for Queen are “We Will Rock You”, “Tie Your Mother Down”, “The Show Must Go On”, “I Want It All”, “Who Wants to Live Forever” and “Hammer To Fall” .
May is co-founder of the band, along with singer Freddie Mercury and drummer Roger Taylor. Having previously worked with Taylor on the band Smile. Which he joined when he was a college student.

Richard Hugh Blackmore (born 14 April 1945) is an English guitarist. He was a founding member and the lead guitarist of Deep Purple, playing jam-style hard rock music that mixed guitar riffs and organ sounds. He is prolific in creating guitar riffs and has been known for playing both classically influenced and blues-based solos.
After leaving Deep Purple in 1975, Blackmore formed the hard rock band Rainbow, which fused baroque music influences and elements of hard rock. Rainbow steadily moved to catchy pop-style mainstream rock. Rainbow broke up in 1984 with Blackmore re-joining Deep Purple until 1993. In 1997, he formed the traditional folk rock project Blackmore's Night along with his current wife Candice Night, shifting to vocalist-centred sounds.
As a member of Deep Purple, Blackmore was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April 2016. He is cited by publications such as Guitar World and Rolling Stone as one of the greatest and most influential guitar players of all time.
Early life
Blackmore was born at Allendale Nursing Home in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, as second son to Lewis J. Blackmore and Violet (née Short). The family moved to Heston, Middlesex, when Blackmore was two. He was 11 when he was given his first guitar by his father on certain conditions, including learning how to play properly, so he took classical guitar lessons for one year.
In an interview with Sounds magazine in 1979, Blackmore said that he started the guitar because he wanted to be like British musician Tommy Steele, who used to just jump around and play. Blackmore loathed school and hated his teachers. The Black Knight
Ritchie Blackmore has always been a bit of mystery, a sort of untamed guitar player with brilliant technique and feel. And even though he wrote some of the most famous guitar riffs and solos in the history of rock music, he is still not talked about enough in my opinion. For example, whenever you come across all those Top 10 guitar players of all time lists, his name is never included That is why it's great that we got this film.
Most true Deep Purple, Rainbow and Blackmore's Night fans will already be familiar with most things mentioned in the film but it's still great to see the man himself talking about them. Ian Gillan is not included in the interviews as you might have expected but it was nice to see Jon Lord, David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes and others talk about working with Ritchie.
I only wish the film was longer so we could maybe learn even more about the inspiration behind his brilliant music and where and when certain riffs and solos were written and maybe take more time to get through all the songs and albums, other than that, it's great.
