Usher, just days after marrying music executive Jennifer Goicoechea, says ex-girlfriend and TLC singer Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas was the one who got away.

The “Confessions” and “Yeah!” singer, 45, revealed that he proposed to fellow musician Thomas, 52, during their relationship in the early 2000s. “I really did love that girl,” Usher said while revisiting his romantic history for People.

The Grammy winner, who said he fantasized about meeting the singer when he was a kid, began dating Thomas — one-third of TLC — in 2001. They dated for three years, eventually breaking things off in 2004. The highs and lows of their romance went on to inform Usher’s 2004 hit release, “Confessions.” At the time of their split, Usher (real name Usher Raymond IV) said he and Thomas were at different stages of their lives.

“I was a young man, and she had very specific rules that didn’t work for me,” he told the magazine. “We were missing each other. I really did want to have a different type of relationship where she was there with me, and she couldn’t be.”

Despite their differences, Usher revealed that at one point he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Thomas. “I wanted to marry her,” he said, “I proposed and she told me no.” In case it wasn’t already clear from songs like “Burn” and “My Boo,” Thomas’ rejection left Usher in his feelings.

He added: “I went through a great deal of pain after that, not trusting women or wanting to open up.”

More than 20 years since their split, both Usher and Thomas have moved on. In 1997, Thomas and producer ex-boyfriend Dallas Austin welcomed son Tron Austin, who is expecting a child of his own. Most recently, Thomas began dating “Mrs. Doubtfire” actor Matthew Lawrence.

Rozonda Ocielian Thomas (born February 27, 1971), also known by her stage name Chilli, is an American singer, dancer and actress who is a member of the group TLC, one of the best-selling girl groups of the late 1990s.

Early life

Thomas was born in Columbus, Georgia and graduated from Benjamin Elijah Mays High School in 1989. Her father, Abdul Ali, is of Bangladeshi and Arab descent, while her mother, Ava Thomas, is African American and Native American.

Thomas, who had been raised by her mother, later allowed the Sally Jessy Raphael television talk show to air footage of her meeting her father for the first time in 1996, when she was 25. When she was a child, her great-grandmother, whom she called Big Mama, took her to the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Thomas was first a dancer for Damian Dame. In 1991, she joined TLC, replacing founding member Crystal Jones, and was nicknamed "Chilli" by Lisa Lopes so that the group could retain the name TLC. The group went on to sell over 65 million records worldwide and became the best-selling American girl group of all-time; only the Spice Girls had sold more. Chilli has won four Grammy Awards for her work with TLC.

In the spring of 1995, Thomas appeared and participated in the track "Freedom (Theme from Panther)" first appeared on the soundtrack to Melvin Van Peebles' movie Panther as TLC, along with SWV, Xscape, En Vogue, Jade, Brownstone and others.

Since the death of group member Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes in April 2002, Thomas and Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins have occasionally performed as a duo. In 2009, Thomas and Watkins performed a series of concerts in Asia.
