Jamie Trevor OliverMBEOSI (born 27 May 1975) is an English celebrity chef, restaurateur and cookbook author. He is known for his casual approach to cuisine, which has led him to front numerous television shows and open many restaurants.

Oliver reached the public eye when his BBC Two series The Naked Chef premiered in 1999. In 2005, he started a campaign, Feed Me Better, to introduce schoolchildren to healthier foods, which was later backed by the government. He was the owner of a restaurant chain, Jamie Oliver Restaurant Group, which opened its first restaurant, Jamie's Italian, in Oxford in 2008. The chain went into administration in May 2019.

Oliver is the second-best-selling British author, behind J. K. Rowling, and the best-selling British non-fiction author since records began. As of February 2019, Oliver had sold more than 14.55 million books. His TED Talk won him the 2010 TED Prize. In June 2003, Oliver was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire for "services to the hospitality industry".

Early life

Jamie Trevor Oliver was born and raised in Clavering, Essex. His parents, Trevor and Sally (née Palmer) Oliver, ran a pub/restaurant, the Cricketers, where he practised cooking in the kitchen with his parents. He has a sister, and was educated at Newport Free Grammar School.

He left school at the age of 16 with two GCSE qualifications in art and geology and went on to attend Westminster Technical College (now Westminster Kingsway College). He earned a City & GuildsNational Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in home economics.

James Trevor Oliver was born and raised in Clavering, a village in Essex County, United Kingdom. Fun fact: the village only has two pubs; one of them being owned by Oliver’s parents, “The Cricketers”.

The pub also served as a restaurant business, and it was there Jamie learned the deeds of cooking as a child. By the time he was 11 he was already doing basic meal prep with the rest of the staff. 

He left school when he was 16. He considered himself to be a “special needs kid” and felt like school had let him down. He changed to Westminster Catering College.

Born on 27 May, 1975, Jamie Trevor Oliver grew up above his parents' Essex pub The Cricketers, where he helped in the kitchens as a tot, and experimented with his mum's Aga cooker when she wasn't looking. It was an early training which was to prove useful for the future celebrity chef, who left school at 16 to attend Westminster Catering College. 

Jobs at several prestigious restaurants in England and the rest of Europe followed. When the tousle-haired maestro stormed onto the TV cooking scene with his program The Naked Chef, critics were initially bemused by the 21-year-old's accent and presenting style. However, they were soon forced to accept that audiences loved his simple, fun food, and good natured friendly persona. 

Not everything has been plain sailing for the popular cook, however. In 2019, Jamie lost many of his successful restaurants after his eponymous restaurant group went into administration.

Charity work

Wanting to put his high-profile status to good use, the big-hearted chef opened a charity restaurant in London called Fifteen in the early 2000s. As part of a TV show called Jamie's Kitchen, he trained fifteen disadvantaged youngsters to work in the catering field at that store. The show was a hit, and other Fifteen restaurants were opened across the world, from Amsterdam to Melbourne, as a result. 

Campaigning

In 2005 Jamie launched his hugely succesful Jamie's School Dinners series, in which he campaigned to get healthier food on the menu in school canteens. Thanks to his efforts the government pledged to spend £280m on school dinners over the course of the next three years and Jamie was voted the year's most inspiring political figure at the Channel 4 Political Awards 2006.
