Ohio State head field hockey coach Jarred Martin named Patrick Cota as an assistant coach for the Buckeyes in March of 2022. Cota comes to Columbus with a decorated playing career and 13 years of collegiate coaching experience.

“I am really excited to have Pat, and his wife Amber, join the Ohio State field hockey family,” said Martin. “He has coached and competed at the highest level with success. For him to bring that to our team will be invaluable. Patrick sees the vision that I have for this program and is excited about where we are headed in both the upcoming season and in seasons to come. I look forward to having him in Columbus, having him strengthen our place in the Big Ten and in the NCAA.”

For 11 seasons, from 2010 through 2021, Cota and an assistant coach at Stanford. In his final season with the Cardinals in the spring of 2021, Cota was part of a staff that was named the West Region Staff of the Year by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). Stanford finished that season with an overall record of 11-3, its fourth conference title in five years and a trip to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament.

“As the steward of Ohio State field hockey, Jarred Martin has built upon the tradition and excellence of the program,” said Cota. “It’s an exciting time within Ohio State athletics and the Big Ten Conference and contributing to the legacy of the program will be a rewarding challenge. This is a special year in recognition of Title IX and the contributions of those who have previously worn the Block O will act as a guide as we lift up and empower our current student-athletes to be strong female leaders. I look forward to collaborating with Jarred, Kate, and the talented student-athletes as we finish out the spring training and embark on preparation for the 2022 season.”

Introduction

Christopher Columbus was an Italian navigator and adventurer who was born in the Republic of Genoa between August 25 and October 31, 1451. He made four remarkable journeys across the Atlantic Ocean under the patronage of the Catholic Monarchs, Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II of Spain. These journeys marked the beginning of European contact with the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. The Latin Christophorus Columbus is the source of the English name Christopher Columbus. Columbus, who grew up on the coast of Ligurian, went to sea at an early age and made several trips from the British Isles to what is now Ghana. After being married to Filipa Moniz Perestrelo, he had Diego, a son. Columbus was primarily self-taught and had a solid understanding of history, astronomy, and geography. He sought to make money from the spice trade and was driven by a scheme to discover a western sea passage to the East Indies.

Following tenacious advocacy and the end of the Granada War, Columbus was able to obtain support from the Catholic Monarchs. He sailed in August of 1492 with three ships, arriving in the Americas on October 12 and bringing an end to the pre-Columbian period. Guanahani, an island in the Bahamas, was the location of his first landfall. Columbus founded a colony in what is now Haiti after exploring Cuba and Hispaniola. When he arrived back in Castile in 1493, word of his adventure traveled throughout Europe. Three more voyages were undertaken by Columbus, who first visited the Lesser Antilles in 1493, Trinidad and the northern coast of South America in 1498, and the east coast of Central America in 1502. He named numerous geographical features but called the native people "Indians." It needs to be clarified how much he knew that the Americas were a different continent.
