Judy Martin Hess is certainly no stranger to Christian music, having been a part of the, already legendary, Martins. As a part of The Martins, Judy has received 3 Grammy nominations, multiple Dove Awards, and countless fan awards. With career highlights that include appearances at New York’s Carnegie Hall, The White House, and nearly a decade of performances on Bill Gaither’s award-winning video and concert series, one could understand if this, now seasoned, singer might be apt to hide behind some of the acclaim and find a more quiet place to live, but Judy Martin Hess remains steadfast in her calling to be out front and unguarded. 

“I feel better, more balanced, and closer to whole when I sing and speak about my struggles. It keeps me reminded of what God has brought me through and what He was done for me and the people I love,” says Judy. “I am becoming more and more comfortable with myself and who God wants to be in me.”

Judy lives in Columbus, GA, with her husband, Jake Hess Jr. They have 4 children; Jake, Hannah, Emma, and Isaac.

The Martins are a Christian music vocal trio composed of three siblings: Joyce Martin Sanders, Jonathan Martin, and Judy Martin Hess.

Music career

They were discovered by Michael English and Mark Lowry with Bill Gaither at the 1987 National Quartet Convention mid-day booth cleanup. The kids, then ages 15, 16, and 17 were singing a capella in an empty civic center after being rejected by a local record company who told them to go back home and forget about trying to make it in "the business."

Following a weekend visit to their hometown by Mr. Howard, they signed with Mark Five Records who launched their first album release in 1990, From Arkansas With Love, produced by Eddie Howard, which quickly ran up the gospel charts. In 1990 A second album release sealed their position in gospel music and the contract was sold to Springhill Records, which would take them to an all-new level of marketing.

Originally from Hamburg, Arkansas, near the Louisiana border in Ashley County, the vocalists grew up firmly and proudly planted in the Southern gospel tradition, so it is not surprising that, as they have matured, a broad range of influences have entered their musical mix. Billboard magazine describes The Martins as "breaking down walls and blurring the lines that separate Southern gospel from inspirational, adult contemporary, and other popular Christian music formats."

Rather than resting in a single niche among the numerous Christian music genres, the Martins have rummaged freely through a stack of style books, grabbing whatever interests them. Sometimes the different elements are unaltered and traditional, but more often they are tossed into the trio's musical blender so that a new mixture emerges. The result has been labeled simply as Martin Music.

Jake Hess (December 24, 1927 – January 4, 2004) was an American Grammy Award-winning southern gospel singer.

Life

The son of "a sharecropper who was a shape-note singing-school teacher," Hess was born in Mt. Pisgah, near Athens, in Limestone County, Alabama. His parents were Stovall and Lydia Hess. He was the youngest of 12 children.

Hess's entry on the Encyclopedia of Alabama's website says of his name: "His parents did not officially name him, so the attending physician entered his name as 'Man Child' Hess in official documents."

When he registered with the draft board in Lincoln, Nebraska, he gave his name as "William Jesse Hess." In 1997, when Hess was preparing to get a passport to travel overseas, he discovered that his birth certificate actually read Manchild Hess. His son, Jake Jr., named his recording company Manchild Records in honor of his father.

Career

Hess' career started at the age of 16, when he joined the popular John Daniel Quartet in 1943, making his recorded debut on "Just a Prayer Away". (He had previously sung with Louie Auten and the Tennessee Valley Boys.) After that, he sang with three of his brothers as the Hess Brothers Quartet. He also sang with the Sunny South Quartet and their rival, the Melody Masters Quartet. In the latter part of his life, Hess sang with The Old Friends Quartet which was featured on the Bill Gaither Homecoming videos.
