ANTONIOS (TONY) SPIROS SOULIS

Kanata, Ontario

Tony was born in in Montreal, QC. He was raised and schooled in Quebec City and entered the Canadian Army Soldier Apprentice Training Program at the Royal Canadian Electrical & Mechanical Engineer School at Barriefield Ontario, in After graduation, he joined Army Aviation in , where he trained on Bell, Hiller, and Sikorsky helicopters at the US Army School of Aviation, Fort Rucker, Alabama, and subsequently deployed as a Helicopter Technician with NATO forces in West Germany.

In , he entered the civil aviation field as an apprentice engineer with Skyrotors Limited of Arnprior, Ontario. He was contracted to maintain Hiller 12Es at Universal Helicopters in support of the Baie D' Espoir hydro-electric project in Newfoundland. After obtaining his AME licence in , he remained with Skyrotors in helicopter maintenance throughout the Yukon and Northwest Territories, where he was one of the first AMEs to maintain Fairchild-Hiller, Bell, and Hughes turbine-powered helicopters.

Joining Transport Canada's Air Services Division at Uplands Ontario in , he shortly thereafter transferred to Quebec City, assuming maintenance responsibility for the Coast Guard's helicopters. While there, he received several awards for maintenance procedure and operational cost improvements. In , he returned to Uplands, responsible for the provision of initial and recurrent helicopter training to TC pilots and AMEs.

He transferred to Transport Canada Civil Aviation (TCCA) in as Superintendent in charge of Technical Inspector and Engineer training. He co-authored the Audit and Inspection Manual, and drafted the maintenance standardization rules for NAFTA's Air Speciality Operations. The regulatory changes to AME licensing standards, credentials, and associated control mechanisms were directly influenced by recommendations in his authored White Paper on AME Licensing & Training Change.

How can cooperation, critical thinking, communication, digital literacy, grit, creativity, and initiative, be incorporated into our work?

Spyros Soulis comes to the TEDxPatras stage to provide us with all the answers and invite us on a learning journey &#; a transformation &#; that spans classrooms, online environments and mountain ranges. A journey that has proven to him conclusively that when we plan together, we grow, succeed and ultimately change.

About the Speaker

Spiros Soulis has been involved in educational industry contexts for over 35 years, working to ensure access and worthwhile learning experiences for various cohorts of learners. At RMIT University his roles included teaching and coordinating the Youth and Community Services Programs and then moving into senior roles in learning particularly in the area of designing learning within the online space. Finally culminating in managing and driving change across the university in program development. His current work at QUT as a teacher and Unit Coordinator in the Graduate Certificate of Education (Innovative Learning Design) has brought about new approaches to using the online platform and humanizing the ​​experience for students.

As a consultant with organizations, he strives to work in collaboration with teams and individuals using empathy and learner experience (LX) approaches.  His project management abilities have seen him organize and manage the

Spyros Soulis and Yanna Papasava are citizens of the globe. They belong to a special category of Greeks who left the choice of immigration, and came back in Greece; they left Australia to come in Greece. They came back home to keep in touch with their family, their friends, to feel the sun, to live as Greeks with their children. Spyros and Yanna are back to Greece for another reason; when a man promises to his wife something, he fulfills that. Who are we if we can’t keep our promises anyway?

Spyros was born in Australia where he studied education. But, he had been back to Greece for other twelve years. He met with Yanna and married her in “We had met at my sister’s school of languages in Patra”, Yanna said and added “Spyros was teaching English language after his adventure on Mount Everest. He was the coordinator of the successful Greek mission”.

Yanna is a teacher. At that time she was attending a kind of seminars about “Greek language as the second language”. “I had decided that I was interested to become posted Greek teacher abroad . At that period I was taking Italian lessons because I wanted to go at Milano, but Spyros was Australian and I made my posting to Australia”. In we went to Melbourne. This was one of my dreams; to become posted Greek teacher and I had finally made that”.

That’s how the trip of their lives begins. Yanna has made her dreams come true. She has been working as a teacher in many elementary or secondary schools of Australia, at public or non-public schools, and colleges. All this experience has made Yanna a better teacher; “&#;in the case you teach Greek language as a foreign language.&#;, she comments. &#;Many of my students were third or fourth generation coming from mixed international marriages”. Foreigners had a completely different opinion about Athens since as tourists had mainly been informed to visit the old town of Plaka near Acropolis make some souvenirs shopping in Monastiraki near by after their short visit from the airport of Glyfada, then much closer to the center by the one today, E. Venizelos. That was their stop before the islands. Up to these years the rest of Athens had managed to be compared to Monte-Carlo as far as I was remembering the status of living of many families in really reach areas like Kolonaki, in the North suburbs of Palaio Psihiko, Filothei, Ecali and Vouliagmeni, Lagonissi near the sea in the South part of Attika. Even before my years I see pictures of the center of Athens with all men dressed in black tie and a hat. People were mostly conservative, social and friendly and the entertainment was up to the morning hours all days of week.

Then the other invasion came to Greece, political this time, called PASOK under its leader A. Papandreou which was one of the serious reasons for the beginning of downfall of Greece.  Having this special feeling those were the years I left Greece as well. Later on his son G. Papandreou continued what his father had started to completely this family be the main reason of Greece destruction and for the economical depression  which followed for some years later on. People I speak with believe that Greece even during dictatorship years, under G. Papadopoulos, was under better development, more successful industrially and finally could stand then in its own feet.  They also felt more proud with glamorous and distinctive personalities who had a lot of guts and glorified Greece like A. Onassis, M. Callas, King Konstantinos, K. Karamanlis and many other recent to name here, but many other greeks are unfortunately attracted by misery in our days.
