Bikol Finalists in the 2024 National Book Awards

We are pleased to share the press release issued by the National Book Development Board (NBDB) and the Manila Critics Circle (MCC) on September 10, 2024. It announced the 42nd National Book Awards which include 17 finalists from Bikol.
The National Book Awards is the annual prize that honors the most outstanding book titles written, designed, and published in the Philippines. It also celebrates the enterprising creative labor involved in book publishing. The 42nd National Book Awards coincides with the two-year preparation of the Philippines as it makes history as the second Southeast Asian country to be chosen as Guest of Honor in 2025 at the world’s biggest book fair, the Frankfurt Bookfair in Germany.
For this cycle of the National Book Awards, a total of 326 titles were submitted across 31 categories consisting of four languages: English, Filipino, Bikol, and Ilokano. Following the awarding of winners during the 41st cycle last February 2024, the 42nd iteration of the awards is set to be held in November 2024.
Listed below are the 17 Bikol finalists in the 2024 National Book Awards competition.

Abdon M. Balde, Jr. is an award-winning Filipino novelist. He has written and published short stories, poems and novels in English, Tagalog and the languages of Bicol.
Balde finished a degree in civil engineering and worked as a construction engineer for thirty-three years, after which he retired to pursue a career as an author. His writer career bloomed and critics noted his unique raw talent. He concentrated in writing creative short stories, poems and novels. He received his first literary award in 2003 and has since continued to win acclaim for his work.
Today, he is a councilor of the organization Lupon Sa Wika, a member of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and director of the Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (UMAbdon M. Thu 9th September 2010Abadon Balde, Jr. an engineer turned successful novelist, short story writer and poet.A consistent award winning Filipino literary writer from Bicol, he is one of the most respected literary figures today in the Philippines, in the company of National Artist Virgilio Almario, aka Rio Alma, 2008 MAN Asia Prize winner Miguel Syjuco, prominent and award-winning writer Alfred A. Yuson, and other talented Filipino writers. His colleagues in Philippine literary field, considered him as a late-bloomer. Almario, in particular, hails him as a new discovery in Philippine literature while another multi-awarded poet Rebecca Aonuevo admires his unique works for their artful imagination and simplicity.
This Bicolano writer is even recognised overseas in the company of such literary stalwarts like Edwin Thumboo, Wena Poon, John Boyne, Mark Waid, Joyce Gan, Miguel Angel Mendo, Partrick Forsyth, Anwar Ridhawan, and Mark Ravinder. Recently, he participated in the Singapore Writers Festival dwelling on various subjects such as writing novels, stories and songs; global perspective on literature, investigating culture and crime in fiction; the business of books and publishing, discovering new writers and finding new readers; crafting anthologies; comics entrepreneurship; creative writing experiences; graphic novels and fantasy; and many other aspects of writing, publishing and selling literary works. He, however, made a significant contribution to the festivals Professional Literary symposium billed as Read ASEAN: A comparison of consumer book-buying habits and trends within the ASEAN.
