3 Diamond Cuts You’ve Probably Never Heard Of

There’s more than meets the eye when it comes to jewelry. Get the big picture with our long-form deep dives into the ever-changing, everlasting jewelry biz.

Meet raw, slice, and portrait diamonds

A category once dominated by classic, emerald cut solitaires and pillowy, cushion cut stones swirled with a halo of pave diamonds is getting quite the overhaul. Jewelers are designing with new techniques to inspire a modern wave of brides. From rough-cut stones to laser-thin slices, these diamond engagement rings offer “something new” to the 21st century bride still wedded to the tradition of a diamond engagement ring.

Raw Diamonds

Just as their name suggests, raw diamonds are diamonds that haven't been cut or polished. They tend to have a milky quality that serves as a backdrop of the stone’s one-of-a-kind inclusions. Although they don’t have a high shine like a traditionally cut diamond, their vast array of color and tone make these rings incredibly unique.. Raw diamonds are also one of the most difficult diamonds to set due to their asymmetrical shape. Typically, a jeweler will cut and facet a diamond so it is even on both sides and can be mounted with a level of measured precision. The settings for raw diamonds are designed specifically for the individual stone. A true one-of-a-kind.

Diamond Slice

Diamond slice rings are made when a laser cutter edges off a “slice” from a larger natural diamond stone typically full of inclusions. The pattern revealed in the slice is a result of the inclusions in the stone and illustrative of the stone’s formation. One side of the diamond is then faceted to give the diamond a bit of shine, but the real personality is the size and dimension of the inclusions. For diamond slice rings, the more the inclusions, the more expensive. Diamond slice rings are set in a protective bevel style to prevent the stone from breaking or chipping. This style ring tends t

  • Marlene Stephenson

Marlene Fay Morley came into this world on August 14, 1933, in Moroni, Utah, to parents who loved and nurtured her, allowing her to be herself. She was raised with two brothers whom she adored. As she got a little older she gained another brother and sister who have been so dear to her. Family has always been most important to her and even during her last few weeks she worried about her siblings and continued to talk about them.

She left this earth to return home to her Heavenly Father and many loved ones on September 6, 2024. She was 91 years old.

Marlene was always one for adventure. Her best friend's father was the sheriff and together they were able to stay under the radar with their shenanigans. Living in a small town meant they had to figure out their own entertainment and Marlene was the one with many great ideas. It's a good thing her parents were incredibly patient.

Marlene learned to swim at a very young age along with the scouts her father would take on outings. She played on the girls' basketball team in school and gave the boys' team a run for their money. She loved to read and often hid a book under her desk at school.

Marlene met her sweetheart, Merlin at a town dance. He had driven to Moroni from Levan to check out the cute Moroni girls. They were married July 9, 1951, in the Manti Temple, just a short time before Merlin left for the Korean War. Merlin continued with the military until his retirement and Marlene carefully sewed patches and ironed uniforms for many years.

Mom and Dad lovingly brought three children into their home and worked hard to support us and made our lives magical. Mom was PTA president for many years, she was always our room mother at school and was so creative in her activities, decorations, and treats. She could create anything she put her mind to. She sewed most of our clothes. Even suits for Dad and Craig. And many of our winter coats as well. She worked with leather creating the
