The “Elderly Welfare and Social Policies for the Elderly During the Pandemic Period Symposium” was held on March 23, 2021, both online and through hybrid sessions, at the Ankara University Rectorate Senate Hall, as part of the Elderly Week between March 18-24, by the Ankara University Center for Gerontology Practice and Research (YAŞAM), in cooperation with the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Services Disabled and Elderly Services General Directorate and the Union of Turkish Municipalities (TBB).

The opening speeches of the symposium were given by Prof. Dr. Emine Özmete, the Director of the Center for Ageing Studies at Ankara University (YAŞAM), Fatma Şahin, the President of the Turkish Municipalities Union and Mayor of Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality, Natasha Azzopardı Muscat, the Director of the Department of Country Health Policies and Systems at the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe, Ankara University Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Ünüvar, and Minister of Family, Labor and Social Services Zehra Zümrüt Selçuk. At the symposium, a poppy-themed felt painting made by disabled individuals at the Saray Disabled Life Care Rehabilitation Center, which is affiliated with the Ministry, was presented as a gift to Minister Selçuk.

In recognition of their selfless and dedicated efforts in providing services to the elderly during the pandemic, which was declared the “Year of Health and Care Workers” in 2021, a plaque of appreciation was presented to the care personnel working at the Nursing Home Elderly Care and Rehabilitation Centers affiliated with the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Services and to the health and care personnel working at the Geriatrics Department of Ankara University Faculty of Medicine, by Minister Selçuk, Ankara University Rector Necdet Ünüvar, and our Director Prof. Dr. Emine Ö

Barack Obama’s Early Life

Obama’s father, also named Barack Hussein Obama, grew up in a small village in Nyanza Province, Kenya, as a member of the Luo ethnicity. He won a scholarship to study economics at the University of Hawaii, where he met and married Ann Dunham, a white woman from Wichita, Kansas, whose father had worked on oil rigs during the Great Depression and fought with the U.S.

Army in World War II before moving his family to Hawaii in 1959. Barack and Ann’s son, Barack Hussein Obama Jr., was born in Honolulu on August 4, 1961.

Obama’s parents later separated, and Barack Sr. went back to Kenya. He would see his son only once more before dying in a car accident in 1982. Ann remarried in 1965.
