Gashmeer Mahajaniisn’t big on making New Year resolutions. “There’s a task for me every day. So, you could say that I have daily resolutions,” he laughs when we ask him if he plans to make a yearly resolution for 2025. But what the Imlie and Phullwanti actor intends to do this year is carry forward the things he learned in 2024 – not carrying a baggage of expectations and being grateful for what he has. Excerpts from an interview:

‘ changed a lot of things’

While he didn’t win the action reality show, Gashmeer’s stint in Khatron Ke Khiladi’s latest season won him a loyal fan following. “Khatron... made a huge impact. Now, wherever I go people ask me about it. I think people connected with my personality through the show. When there was drama happening around, my calm demeanour and genuineness connected with people,” he tells us. And did it also make him a household name, we ask. He replies, “Imlie also took me to a lot of households but as Aditya Kumar Tripathi. The reality show presented me as Gashmeer, the real person. It showed people that giving excuses for failure isn’t part of my personality.”

‘Right time for me to do a young, romantic film’

In the upcoming Marathi film Ek Radha Ek Meera (ERAM), directed by Mahesh Manjrekar, Gashmeer will be seen in a romantic avatar. The film took its time to release, having been ready for a while now, but Gashmeer says it’s coming out at the perfect time. “We even shifted the release date a few times but it’s finally releasing around Valentine’s Day and I think that’s what was meant to be,” says the actors, adding, “The film is a candy floss romance, a genre almost never explored in Marathi cinema. I think this is the right time for me to be in that zone. A few years later people may not connect with me in such characters. ERAM is the kind of film which is tailor made for the younger audie

Terrific love triangle takes TV by storm

Eastern Eye caught up with the actor to discuss his journey, latest serial, future aspirations, inspirations, and experiences in Gujarati cinema.

What first connected you to acting?

Since childhood, I had a passion for watching films and TV serials, but I never imagined becoming an actor – I was actually preparing for the IAS exam. The turning point came in 2004 when I saw people queuing for auditions at Zee TV India’s Best Cinestar Ki Khoj. Inspired, I decided to give it a shot. I stood in line from 5am for the Ahmedabad round, and to my surprise, I won among 3,000 participants.

What was that experience like?

It changed my life overnight – suddenly, there were hoardings of me across Ahmedabad. Though I didn’t progress far in the Mumbai round, it motivated me to prove myself. That’s how my acting journey began, and I’ve been on this path for 15-16 years.

How do you reflect on your acting journey so far?

It’s been a journey filled with challenges, growth, and self-discovery. Acting demands constant perseverance, and every day, you have to prove yourself. There were moments when I thought of quitting, but Mumbai and divine blessings kept me going. Today, I look back with gratitude, knowing this is my purpose, and I cherish every moment.

Which character has been closest to your heart?

In my current show, my character has a mix of romance, fun, and innocence, and I’m really enjoying it. But my role in Yeh Hai Chahatein was special because it was my first double role, transitioning from a positive to a negative character. Playing Indra Dev in Sankat Mochan Hanuman was also a turning point – it helped me refine my Hindi and connect deeply with mythological storytelling.

What was it like working on TV drama Yeh Hai Chahatein?

It was an incredible experience. Initially, I joined for a short cameo, but the audience and team loved my character so much that I stayed until the show ended. Workin
