Bette Midler, 78, has never shared a bedroom with her husband after 40 years of marriage
Bette Midler and her husband Martin von Haselberg have slept in separate bedrooms for 40 years.
The 78-year-old Hocus Pocus star tied the knot with the actor back in 1984 after knowing each other for just six weeks. They welcomed their daughter, Sophie Von Haselberg, in 1986.
Now the Hollywood icon has revealed the secret to their lasting relationship is sleeping separately – insisting they made the decision to have their own bedrooms because of Martin’s snoring.
When asked about the secret to her lasting marriage, Bette told Entertainment Tonight: ‘Separate bedrooms. My husband snores,’ before describing her marriage as a ‘fabulous ride.’
They’re not the only famous pair to admit sleeping in different beds, with everyone from Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip to David and Victoria Beckham reportedly having separate rooms.
Gwyneth Paltrow has spoken openly about sleeping in a separate room to partner Brad Falchuck in the early days of their relationship, telling Harpers Bazaar in 2020: ‘I think it certainly helps with preserving mystery and also preserving the idea that this person has their own life.’
Bette previously revealed the relationship works because the couple give each other space and know when to stop arguing.
She told People: ‘I think the secret is giving each other a lot of lead and a lot of room and not being in each other’s faces all the time …
‘[Giving in during an argument is] very hard. But sometimes you have to say, ‘It’s not worth it. The fight is not worth it. You have your way and maybe next Thursday I’ll have mine.’ Keep supporting each other. That’s hard, too.’
Bette and Martin first met in 1981 but didn’t actually go out on their first date until 1984 and ended up getting married just six weeks later.
They eloped to Las Vegas and said their vows in front of an Elvis Presley impersonator.

Better Midler and her husband, Martin von Haselberg, have been together for nearly 40 years, but they went decades before ever seeing a photo from their wedding.
The "First Wives Club" star, 75, opened up Tuesday on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" about how she and her hubby, 72, wed in 1984 in a spur-of-the-moment ceremony at the Starlight Chapel in Las Vegas. (She proposed to him!)
For years, the couple had no photographic evidence of their nuptials. "There were no cell phones in 1984. So we had no pictures," the Emmy-winner explained.
That changed about five years ago when, out of the blue, an employee from the chapel sent the couple images from their big day.
"Apparently, there was a photographer there. When the Starlight Chapel closed its doors, which was about five years ago, they sent us the pictures. We had never seen the pictures!" Midler shared.
In true Vegas style, Midler and von Haselberg were joined at the venue that day by only one other person: the Elvis Presley impersonator who performed the ceremony!
Midler also said she made her soon-to-be husband change outfits before they walked down the aisle.
"He got all dressed up in this suit and I was like, 'I'm not marrying you in that suit! So he had to change his suit," she said, adding they had a tape of Italian pianist Nino Rota music play as the ceremonies' soundtrack.

Vintage Vibes
The couple first met in 1981, but they didn't kindle their romantic flame for another two years. Per Vanity Fair, Midler gave von Haselberg her phone number when they reunited at a club, and within six weeks of their first official date, they were married.
Vegas, Baby!
Despite their glamorous Hollywood lives, they skipped an opulent ceremony in favor of a Las Vegas wedding officiated by a part-time wedding impersonator. They didn't even get their hands on the photos from their spontaneous union until 2008, when the chapel closed down and unearthed the couple's pictures.
Decades after their 1984 nuptials, the Emmy winner told Jimmy Kimmel that she was the one to propose.
Finding Their Footing
While they didn't hesitate to marry, TheStepford Wives star didn't automatically jump into a new, shared life with von Haselberg. Midler told Vanity Fairthat they waited a couple months to move in together — “I hardly knew him!” she said.
And their whirlwind romance wasn't always easy to navigate.
“We had a lot of trouble the first couple of years,” she explained during the same 1991 interview with Vanity Fair. “We had a tremendous amount of trouble. He couldn’t understand why I would get so upset about things and he couldn’t retaliate. But it’s all kind of evened out now.”
'Making It Work'
Seconding Midler's determination, von Haselberg added of their wedding: “Even though I didn’t know her at all, I remember consciously making the decision that no matter what happens I’m going to keep working at this to make it work. Even if it turns out that she’s not the person I think she might be, I’m just going to keep going through it and making it work," he told Vanity Fair.
